On May 19, Team Blake Shelton singer Jake Worthington gave a rousing performance of “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Keith Whitley.

This song was America’s pick for the 18-year old country singer, who sang the ballad for his Blind Audition this year. Though the judges passed on the La Porte, Texas artist last season, it was this song that had them all fighting over him on his return. The encore performance definitely made us remember why. The tender tune brings out the best in Jake’s voice.

Usher congratulated Jake on his growth and a fantastic performance. Shakira recalled that while her fellow coaches were clamoring for Jake over his voice in the beginning, she just wanted to squeeze him. However, now Jake has gained so much maturity and credibility over the course of the season with performances like this that she now sees him as more than a cuddly county kid. Adam Levine celebrated the subtlety and memorable quality in his tone. Blake took the time to talk “man to man” to Jake to appreciate how Jake is continuing the tradition of old-school country singers like Keith Whitley.
