We’ve been loving all the new additions to the battle rounds this season of The Voice has given us, from the new “steal” button to Christina Aguilera’s ever changing hair styles. But were all these new twists recorded live for our viewing pleasure?

While we love our battle rounds, they’re actually filmed a couple months in advance. This season’s battle rounds aired in October, but were filmed in early August, giving the judges and contestants a little breather and a leg up on the public before they gear up for the live rounds later in the season.

And considering how many battles they always have to get through, packing them all into a two-hour live show every week isn’t quite feasible, but that does mean we don’t get as many impromptu or slightly awkward moments from our favorite judges.

Then again, that may be a good thing.
