Blake Shelton’s Not-So-Family Christmas special is definitely living up to its name, as he knocks the light out of Rudolph’s red nose tonight, Dec. 3 at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
During the country singer’s holiday special, he takes dark comedy to the next level with an R-rated claymation sketch that kills off two popular Christmas characters: Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, animated versions of Blake and his comedian pal Larry the Cable Guy “go hunting and accidentally shoot Rudolph dead,” and then proceed to “accidentally or purposely” mow down most of the reindeer’s pals. The final kill? Frosty the Snowman, who is “eliminated with a blowtorch, since he’s the one witness to the crimes who can’t be felled with bullets.”
Though the audience was a bit upset by the bloody animated sketch, Blake has no regrets.
“We’re still on the fence if we pushed it too far with the claymation thing or not,” he admitted to THR after the taping wrapped. “You know what? We had all these meetings, and it’s like, ‘Man, have we gone too far with the claymation?’ And finally it’s like, ‘It’s clay! It’s just clay! Why are we even talking about … It’s clay! Who cares?’ We had fun with it, though.”
Blake also noted that he wasn’t sure if the sketch would make the final cut, but according to the site, viewers will definitely be seeing the bloodbath tonight. Those upset by it can distract themselves with Christina Aguilera, who will not be dueting with her fellow coach again, but instead showing off her comedic chops in a skit about fake Voice chairs!
