While Blake Shelton is excited about his new Christmas album and corresponding television special, he also has some heartbreaking memories tied to the holiday season.

The Voice coach spent last Christmas Eve in the hospital with his father, who suffered from a fatal illness and passed away in Jan. 2012. In Blake’s cover story with Country Weekly, the singer opens up about his final Christmas with his dad.

The rest of his family — including his wife, Miranda — had holiday plans, but Blake decided to spend the night at his father’s bedside. “I said, ‘If it’s OK with everybody, I’m just going to stay up here with Dad,’” Blake told the magazine. “It ended up being Dad and I on Christmas Eve, sitting in his hospital room and watching Dumbest Stuff on Wheels for about four hours on his little TV there in the room. I wouldn’t trade that night for anything.”

And he’s thankful that he made that decision — especially since his dad’s next few weeks would sadly be his last.

“He got a lot sicker after that, and I think if everybody in the family had known, you couldn’t have fit another person in the hospital room,” he continued. "I brought a few gifts for him that people sent with me, so he got to open some things that night. It was a special night, it really was.”
