Not only did coach Blake Shelton get to put a second Voice victory under his belt when Cassadee Pope won last night, but, for the first time, his remaining contestants stole the Top 2 spots.
Naturally, the funny man was all smiles when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with him on the red carpet after the show last night.
Wetpaint Entertainment: You actually knew that you were winning before the show was over because you had the Top 2. How did that feel?
Blake Shelton: I didn’t know how to feel. I think a part of me was going, “If it gets down to Cassadee [Pope] and Nicholas [David] or Terry [McDermott] and Nicholas, then I’m going to have a heart attack.” And then it came down to Cassadee and Terry, I almost had a stroke. Do you jump up and celebrate? Do you cry? What do you do?
The cool thing is Terry knows that he’s got the world at his fingertips right now and he’s a fan favorite also. I don’t know what it came down to, but it was probably a fraction of a difference in the voting. When I look at the Internet and I’m reading my Twitter account, it really is 50/50 between the two. They are both just special people that just have a gift at what they do, and the way that they execute is amazing. I wish they would teach me at how to do this stuff.
Oh come on! You’ve won two years in a row! What’s your secret?
I tried to sing with Terry McDermott last night on the Aerosmith song, and I had blood in my stool this morning because of it. The guy sings so high. Yes, I said it. Do you want me to say it again? I had blood in my stool and in my urine because he sang so high that I think it twisted my innards, my organs inside out. I don’t know how he does it.
You should get that checked out.
I’ll be OK. I’ve been drinking.
Well, given the results on iTunes, Cassadee has been in the lead for quite a while. Were you really surprised that she was the victor at the end of the day?
No. I don’t care what any of us say up and down this red carpet, we all had a feeling that Cassadee would win just because we all look at iTunes. If you follow that show, you see how important that is and you see that week after week she was up there. I think three weeks, she was No. 1. It was just one of those things that you go, “Man. I think Cassadee is going to win but I don’t know. I don’t know how much difference there is with the telephone vote and texting and voting on your computer — however people do it — I don’t know how much difference it’s going to be between that and people actually buying music. She didn’t surprise anybody I don’t think. The biggest accomplishment for Cassadee was getting that momentum early on and holding onto it.
You have a history, maybe more than any other Voice coach of really supporting your past contestants. What are your plans for working with Terry and Cassadee in the future?
Oh my gosh. I don’t know that I’ll get the opportunity to work with Terry and Cassadee. I think that they are so popular already that they may forget about me. They may not need me. Here’s what they need to know and they know it is I’m their friend. I’m not trying to manage them. I’m not trying to be their agent. I don’t want to make one dime off either one of them. I just want to be their friend and help them through this experience if they want me to.
If they decide they don’t even want to be singers anymore and they want to do something else, I wanna be there for them for that. They are friends. They are family to me and that’s what our bond is. Nothing more than that and it just so happens that I have a few years of experience in the music industry and the entertainment industry, and I’ve got some s— to say about that. If they ask me then I’ll tell them what I think, and I hope they know they can lean on me for the truth and that’s all I’m here for.
