For all you Voice neophytes out there, here’s a quickie guide to the hit NBC singing competition.

Phase One: Blind Auditions

The show kicks off with blind auditions. Positioned with their backs to the stage, the four coaches listen to a series of potential competitors. If a coach wants a singer to be on their team, they turn around. If more than one coach wants someone, it’s up to the singer to decide which team to join. Each coach gets eight singers to mentor.

Phase Two: Battles

The coaches split their teams up into four pairs. Each pair performs the same song together in a head-to-head sing-off to determine who advances to the next round. The coach chooses the winner of each of these four battles, and these winners then compete in live battles. Two singers from each team advance to the Final 8 — viewer votes determine one, the coaches select the other.

The Final 8 contestants compete against each other in live broadcasts, and the television audience and coaches decide who moves on to the Final 4. In the end, one singer from each team makes it to the finale. It’s up to the viewers to determine the winner of the $100,000 grand prize and a Universal Republic recording contract.
