Is The Voice in Trouble? 3 Reasons Why Its Success Will Last

For the first time in a while, NBC's outlook is pretty good.

The network has been the butt of poor ratings jokes (even from its own shows), but now competitors are quaking thanks to NBC’s success this year, fueled mainly by The Voice.

Former American Idol judge and creator of The X Factor Simon Cowell has called The Voice a “copy” of his music competitions, and reportedly told a rejected singer on The X Factor that they could audition for The Voice.

At Fox's upfront last month, entertainment president Kevin Reilly presented a graph called “Decline of the Voice,” which featured a single line pointing downward. Threatened, much?

And yet, this Thursday (June 7), Fox will premiere a new reality show called The Choice. Though this new show is based on dating rather than performing, it features four spinning chairs and a name that rhymes with a certain music competition we know and love.

Have they really stooped so low?

But we’re not worried about The Voice’s fate and you shouldn’t be either. Here’s why:

1) The Voice is its own show, which Fox has helpfully proven by copying it

Though Simon claims The Voice is a copy of American Idol, only with spinning chairs, the two shows couldn’t be more different.

By offering preliminary rounds even before the show’s “blind auditions,” NBC’s hit bypasses the ridiculous tryouts American Idol provides, so we're spared crazy bikinis or tone-deaf 90-year-olds.

Meanwhile, The Choice features blind "auditions" to go on dates with celebrities, complete with the spinning chairs.

2) The rapid pace and surprising twists on The Voice keep viewers interested

After the blind auditions, each of the four coaches had 12 contestants on their teams. So the battle rounds started with 48 contestants. By April 2, that number was down to 24; by April 10, they'd been whittled to 16; and by April 24, only eight contestants were standing.

The finale featured the final four contestants. On American Idol, we spent what felt like an eternity with the same contestants, listening to Jessica Sanchez belt out yet another ballad and Skylar Laine croon country tune after country tune.

The speed of The Voice allowed us to hear a variety of performances from a diverse set of singers!

3) The Voice has fantastic chemistry between its judges

No offense, but Steven Tyler and J. Lo don’t do it for us like the original Paula Abdul/Simon Cowell dynamic. Once American Idol, lost its first set of judges, things haven’t been the same. And don’t get us started on The X Factor’s Chatroulette approach to celebrity judging.

The Voice’s diverse, yet compatible, judges are excellent representations of the show’s contestants. There’s the rocker, the country singer, the pop diva, and the soulful R&B singer (and though ABC’s Duets copied that dynamic, we had it first!).

There’s enough drama to keep us interested, enough jokes to keep us entertained, and enough love to make the cast endearing. And despite the rumors that the judges will be replaced in the spring, we’re all set for a killer fall season!

So no matter what Fox, Simon Cowell, or any other haters may attempt, The Voice isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
