In a recent interview with Christina Milian, Voice Season 2 mentor Kelly Clarkson said she was dying to be a contestant on The Voice. Apparently she couldn’t make that happen so she decided to star in a new vocal competition instead.

Duets, set to hit ABC this summer, will star Kelly Clarkson, Robin Thicke, Lionel Richie, and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. Hmm, a female pop star, a seductive rocker, a soul singer, and a country singer … sounds like a cast of judges we already know.

The twist (because every music show needs a twist these days)? The stars on Duets will not serve as judges, but rather as duet partners. Each week Kelly, Robin, Lionel, and Jennifer will take the stage to perform with their duet partners.

The celebrities involved are in charge of finding their own duet partners. Kelly said she might hold impromptu auditions while on tour, but ultimately she could walk into a bar and find the next great talent.

By the end of the competition, one singer will get a recording deal with Hollywood Records.

Coincidence that Kelly, Robin, and Lionel were all Voice mentors? We think not. Though the two shows will be on competing networks, it feels like their Voice gigs were practice for this new show.
