It’s not uncommon for singing competition contestants to have prior record deals, but this season on The Voice, the Final 3 all have successful pasts.

Team Blake’s Terry McDermott was the frontman of Scotland-based band Driveblind for five years. They were signed to Geffen Records, and even though they didn’t have any chart-topping singles, they gained major success by touring with big bands like Foo Fighters and The Bravery.

Team Cee Lo’s soulful singer, Nicholas David, owns a music label, has released five studio albums, and has been incredibly successful in Minnesota, but he wasn’t a household name until The Voice. However, he and The Feelin’ Band have had some national radio success!

The only performer left standing with a big career behind her is Team Blake’s Cassadee Pope. The young singer was the frontwoman for Hey Monday, a pop rock band that was signed by Pete Wentz’s (of Fall Out Boy fame) label, Decaydance. She wrote most, if not all, of the band’s songs on their EPs and full-length album, and during their three years together, and “Candles” was even featured on Glee!

Regardless of the Final 3’s success before The Voice, it all comes down to how they perform on the show. With the final night of performances airing tonight, Dec. 17, we think it’s a better time than ever to break out the big guns and wow America. Considering that all three are songwriters, showcasing that they don’t just have a great voice but also songwriting ability could take them even further.

Even though the show focuses on vocal talent, it wasn’t enough to take Season 1 winner Javier Colon or Season 2 winner Jermaine Paul to the next level. Yes, they sounded great on the show, but they haven’t written or released hit songs — unless you count Jermaine’s commercials.

We’re not saying that the previous winners aren’t talented, but after The Voice, cover songs can’t craft a career. Fantastic original music is what people typically look for in a musician, and this could be a great way for the contestants to break away from the show just enough to show off their well-rounded talent. If it’s catchy, that’s just icing on the cake!

If they were to sing their own songs tonight, Cassadee would have an edge because of the familiarity of Hey Monday’s music, but Terry and Nicholas would benefit, too. Whether or not they pick up a guitar or get behind a piano doesn’t matter — it’s delivering a great performance with heartfelt, well-written lyrics that could really wow the crowd.

Of course, hearing Cassadee sing singles like “Candles” or “How You Love Me Now” would be fantastic, but she could pull out a lesser-known tune like the gorgeous “6 Months” or any songs off of her solo EP and have fans be just as in the dark as they are with Terry or Nicholas’s music. And hey, who knows — there could be as many Driveblind and The Feelin’ fans watching as there are Hey Monday lovers. You never know.

Do you think the Final 3 should play their own music, or will they run into a “Cupid’s Shuffle” situation like in the Season 3 blind auditions? Sound off below!
