No words can describe the amount of stress contestant Karina Iglesias must have felt in the seconds before Adam Levine and Blake Shelton turned for her blind audition on The Voice Season 4.

The veteran coaches waited until the last second to hit their buttons, leaving them with a similar adrenaline rush.

“That was the most stressful thing I have ever gone through in my entire life,” Adam told Karina right after she finished.

The 35-year-old opted to sing Melissa Etheridge’s “I’m the Only One” during her blind audition, which, being openly gay, she found to be the perfect fit. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the musician the day after her audition aired to ask her about her performance.

“I love Melissa Etheridge. I’m a big fan of her,” she told us. “I think it’s hard for already out artists to make it big in this industry, and she’s a big example of that. She’s a Grammy winner. I was so honored to be able to pay homage to her song. I love blues and rock and roll and I love the edge of her song.”

And while she ended up on Team Adam, Karina admits that singing a verse in Spanish was meant to entice new coach Shakira.

“Singing a little bit of it in Spanish was definitely a strategy to get as many chair turns as possible,” she continued. “I’m blessed that I was able to get Blake and Adam to turn around because that’s kind of what I envisioned when I found out that I had a blind audition.”

While Karina has a sound all her own, she’s also fielding tons of comparison from Season 1 Team Cee Lo finalist Vicci Martinez.

“I’ve heard several comparisons to Vicci Martinez,” she said. “Any comparison to an artist that’s out there doing their thing and artists moreover that were very successful and almost won the show is a good thing. Definitely, I welcome the comparison and I’m flattered.”
