Voice fans, welcome to the final week of Season 4 blind auditions! With 16 remaining spots, coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Usher, and Shakira will have their work cut out for them.
Tonight’s contestants are more competitive than ever as the celebrity judges finish up their teams of 12. Each coach has already snagged multiple potential winners, but in a competition that’s so unpredictable, it’s anyone’s game.
Here’s what happened tonight:
This former-recording-artist-turned-golf-pro was looking to jumpstart his career on The Voice. Putting his argyle socks aside, Jeff decided to sing Usher’s hit, “U Got It Bad” — a dangerous pick for an acoustic guitar player from Texas.
Ush made Jeff wait until the very last second before pressing his button. Blake Shelton and Shakira pressed their buttons soon after, prompting the singer to jump up and down in excitement.
Blake claimed he noted a hint of country in Jeff’s sound, complementing Jeff’s guitar playing skills. Shakira mentioned a few flaws in Jeff’s rendition, saying she was willing to work hard to help him improve.
But Usher told Jeff that if he wanted to win, he should moonwalk on over to Team Ush. And moments later, he did!
This seasoned performer grew up idolizing Elvis Presley and moved to Nashville to make her own music dreams come true. She’s performed with Kid Rock and other major country artists like Gretchen Wilson.
The 45-year-old singer took to The Voice stage singing “She Talks to Angels” by The Black Crowes. Calling the experience “Elvis epic,” Shawna P managed to get Shakira and Adam Levine to turn their chairs.
“You have a voice on you,” Adam declared.
Shakira went on to say that she was “seduced” by Shawna’s voice noting that it went back to the roots of classic rock and roll.
Apparently Shawna felt the attraction too, because she picked Team Shak!
Up next was another mellow coffeehouse singer ready to show her stuff on The Voice. The star was taking off a semester from college to take a chance and audition, so the pressure was on!
Luckily, her rendition of Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” convinced Blake Shelton and Shakira to turn for her.
Blake was quick to compliment Caroline’s dimples, claiming to have a similar bone structure. You know what they say, the coach that has the same dimples as you, is meant to mentor you!
Shakira was quick to throw out the big musical vocabulary in the hopes of impressing the star, but it was Blake’s mention of songwriting that really appealed to Caroline. She joined the country crooner’s group without hesitation.
This 24-year-old triple threat is looking to inspire others with his sound. After working with at-risk youth, Cameron wanted to show the kids that he could pursue his dreams and start a successful music career.
Unfortunately, his dance-heavy performance of Justin Bieber’s “As Long As You Love Me” fell flat when Cameron ran out of air. His breathing control cost him a spot on the show, and Cameron was sent back home empty-handed.
This deputy sheriff is known as “Big Country” because he can “literally ride [his] horses from [his] house down to the local saloon.” Talk about credentials!
Michael’s performance of Keith Urban’s “Somebody Like You,” managed to turn Adam Levine, and Shakira.
Adam was quick to call Blake “stupid” for not turning and urged Michael to pick his team to shame Blake. Shakira was quick to tell Michael that her sound was eclectic and that she did, in fact, have the ability to yodel. Oh OK, we see you, girl!
Michael informed all of the coaches that he owned an album from each and every one of them (umm please tell us you own Usher’s Confessions), but ultimately he picked Team Adam Levine to shove Blake’s lack of appreciation in his face.
This mother of two had put her career on hold to take care of her kids, but the New York native isn’t giving up on her dreams. She sang backup for former coach Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keys, and John Legend, but would her solo sound be enough to land her a spot on someone’s team?
Sasha has nothing to worry about, stepping onto The Voice stage in her stunning red dress and singing The Dixie Chicks’ “Not Ready to Make Nice.”Adam Levine complimented her “natural God-given gift.” And Blake was quick to say that she was meant to be on his team, repeating the phrase multiple times to make sure it properly sunk in.
All of the coaches came ready to woo Sasha onto their respective teams, but Sasha decided that Adam Levine was her man and joined his team.
This 19-year-old teen is the nephew of Ed — a member of the legendary disco band, The Trammps, known for their hit, “Disco Inferno.”
Opting for a tune a little different from his family’s legacy, Matt chose to sing Katy Perry’s song, “Teenage Dream.” And though Blake Shelton did say that Matt looked “pretty without any makeup on,” his voice wasn’t enough to get a chair turn.
Adam encouraged Matt to come back and give it another shot, but ultimately, he was sent packing.
Next was a quick montage featuring contestant Jamila Thompson whose rendition of Beyonce’s “Halo” captured Usher’s attention. We also saw Amy Whitcomb get snatched up by Adam Levine after singing Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You.” Country singer Justin Rivers managed to nab Blake Shelton, as did Michelle Raitzin.
Young Cuban native, Mary Miranda, immigrated to America, and is desperate to make a name for herself and reach her father who lives in Spain.
Mary’s rendition of a classic Selena song sung entirely in Spanish managed to get Blake Shelton, Usher, and Shakira to turn. All of the coaches made some desperate pleas, but in the end, her heart was always on Team Shak.
The next artist had big hair and an even bigger voice. Grace, a Memphis native, took to The Voice stage singing the iconic hit, “These Boots Are Made For Walking.”
Blake Shelton and Shakira turned for the country crooner and Blake immediately turned on the charm.
“I don’t think there’s anything sexier than a girl who gets up there with a chrome guitar,” he said.
“Aww, shucks!” Grace replied.
Shakira wasn’t giving up easily. Trying to grab the singer, she called Grace’s style “refreshing.”
But Blake’s appreciation for Grace’s “bluntry” (blues and country) style ended up reigning supreme. Grace stuck to her country roots (despite her real roots being high up in the sky) and joined Team Blake.
This bubbly teen was looking to show a deeper side to herself through her music. Both of her parents were diagnosed with cancer within a week of each other, and Jane lost her father only a few years ago.
Struggling to cope, Jane called The Voice a life saver. Unfortunately, none of the coaches were willing to turn for her rendition of “You’ve Got the Love.” We were shocked that the coaches failed to turn for her performance, but Jane kept a positive outlook saying “I’m young, I’ve got all the time in the world.”
Shakira and Adam encouraged the singer to really embrace the meaning behind the song lyrics. But with Adam Levine and Usher both calling Jane “cute,” Jane certainly didn’t go home empty-handed.
Next we saw a montage of contestants who didn’t manage to make it through and also failed to get the screen time that Jane did.
After training to be a doctor, Ryan had the rug pulled out from under him when his engagement was called off. The painful end to his relationship encouraged Ryan to start fresh with music.
“I might be late to the party, but I’m going to make the most noise,” he said.
In the final performance of the night, 31-year-old soul singer Ryan Innes set The Voice stage on fire with his rendition of John Mayer’s “Gravity.”
Adam Levine and Blake Shelton pressed their buttons within seconds of Ryan’s first note. Newbies Usher and Shakira soon followed suit and Ryan got his own four-chair turn!
Blake told Ryan that listening to him was the most fun he’d had all day. Shakira said Ryan’s performance left her “floating” in her chair, and Usher told Ryan that he waited a bit to turn in order to properly savor his sound.
Adam, on the other hand, noted the “lightning quickness” with which he pressed his button. Ryan told the coaches he’d been hoping for a gut feeling to help him make his decision, and Adam offered to kick him in the stomach.
But Ryan ultimately decided to go with Soul Man, Usher!
