Usually by finale week, contestants get into the groove and play to their strengths, but on The Voice Season 3 last night, Team Cee Lo’s Nicholas David did a 180 from his typical slow, soulful performances and wowed everyone with a mashup of Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Great Balls of Fire” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire.”

The fun-loving father showed off a new side of his voice and some killer dance moves with the fast-paced, exciting song. And if that wasn’t enough, his piano was on fire, he was surrounded by flashy dancers, and he rocked a metallic gold suit! He commanded the stage, pushing his voice to new octaves and clearly challenging himself, and honestly, we’re surprised that he didn’t break out this new style earlier! However, if any performance could crown him the winner, this was definitely the one.

As he soulfully belted out the song, he danced around the stage, playfully shimmying around with the guitarists. But the most exciting moment came when he literally kicked off the night at the end of the song — with karate moves! He high-kicked and chopped the air with his hands, ending the powerful performance with a bang.

This may be too little too late in comparison to Cassadee’s longtime reign over the iTunes charts, but this shows America that Nick isn’t a one-trick pony. He is a true rock star, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next, regardless of whether he wins The Voice or not!
