The Voice kicked off its Top 12 live shows last night with a mixed bag of performances. Although we love the finalists, it didn’t feel like everyone brought their A-game. There were a few pop hits, some interesting takes on classic songs, and a few surprising choices, but at the end of the night, we were left wanting more.

However, one performer stood out by changing up his style — something that he told Wetpaint Entertainment he wouldn’t do a few weeks ago.

“I think to stay here I have to stick with my rocker side and put some soul into that,” Team Adam’s Bryan Keith told us. “It’s my forte and I want to make sure that that stands in people’s minds and keep going in that direction.”

Last night, Bryan stepped out of the rocker box, delivering a soulful rendition of Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black.” His performance was simple, yet spot on, balancing his soulful, smooth voice with moments of strong, rockin’ flair. Bryan impressed by showcasing his range and the strength of his voice, finding middle ground between heavier classic rock and soft ballads like last week (with Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris.”)

It’s no secret that Bryan is a fan favorite, but before last night’s performance, he was in danger of being a one-dimensional singer. Last night, he showed that he’s open to many genres and styles, and the coaches said he “took the lead” in his “breakout moment.”
