There have been plenty of strong performances on The Voice Season 3 live shows, but the most impressive ones were those who stepped outside of their comfort zones. Although we’ve seen Cody Belew tackle many genres throughout the competition, he finally found his perfect fit with Queen’s “Somebody to Love” last night.

After his crazy Beyonce performance last week, we were getting a little nervous about Cody. But this week, instead of distracting us with dancing and elaborate costumes, he showcased his theatrical voice and great range.

Freddie Mercury isn’t an easy artist to emulate, but Cody’s rendition was spot-on, hitting the song’s insanely high notes while dancing around the stage. He also belted a few times and matched up perfectly with the gospel choir backing him — all while maintaining excellent stage presence and getting the crowd riled up. The final piercing high note was what solidified it for us, although seeing him standing on top of the piano in a snazzy, well-fitted suit didn’t hurt, either.

We have a lot of feelings about Cody’s fantastic performance, but we’re going to let his coach, Cee Lo Green, take it from here with his compliments:

“What a wonderful, wonderful job. I’m just so very proud of you and your growth at such an accelerated rate,” he said to Cody last night. “You make me feel confident about my own ears and eyes and heart.”
