Though brightly dressed and proudly positive De’Borah Garner made her exit from The Voice Season 3 a few weeks ago, we still miss her energy on Team Christina. This creative singer is the daughter of two pastors, but has always found it tough to find her footing in the church.
When we were originally introduced to her during the blind auditions, De'Borah was quick to talk about her painful past.
“I’m originally from the church world and my appearance become more than my voice,” De’Borah said to the judges following her blind audition. “My sister heard about the show and she told me, ‘This is where you fit. They don’t care what you look like. All they care about is how good you can do.’”
But even more interesting was what De’Borah had to say about her sexuality before she took to The Voice stage. The 25-year-old from Chicago stated point blank that she is, in fact, a lesbian.
When Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the young singer following her audition, she revealed that last night’s episode was also the first time she had uttered those words.
“I never ever mentioned those words ‘I’m gay.’ I’ve never said that before,” De’Borah said. “And it didn’t even freak me out — it was just like, ‘Whoa, I can’t believe I just said that.’”
The singer had never ever officially told her parents, either.
“They knew, but I’ve never actually uttered the words,” she said. “It was more of just an assumption.”
And it was her coach, Christina Aguilera, who inspired her to find her voice within. Xtina’s chair turning was a big moment in De’Borah’s life.
“When I saw her, I just died inside. I couldn’t believe it,” she gushed.
