Though we eat up every second of the coaches’ banter and contestant interaction on The Voice Season 3, we’ve often wondered how much of it is genuine. So when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with three Team Adam contestants — Nicole Nelson, Joe Kirkland, and Loren Allred — this week, we decided to get their take on the rock star.
No surprise, all three couldn’t stop raving about the sexy singer. Joe talked about relating to Adam through their similar circumstances saying, “I used to not be the frontman of my band, and learning how to become that was my struggle, and I actually found out that Adam was the same way. He actually was not frontman of the band [Maroon 5] when he first started.”
And his relatability stretches beyond similar circumstances. Seasoned contestant Nicole Nelson told Adam about her fear of fame.
“It seemed very draining to me, and it’s something that I’ve always kind of avoided,” Nicole admitted.
But Adam was ready with a very interesting story to help Nicole conquer those fears. He told her of a time he was on a safari in Africa and narrowly missed an encounter with a pack of lions.
When he asked his guides what they do if they happen upon the predators, they responded, “Don’t run, because whether they’re hungry or not, if you run then it’s a game and they’ll chase you and they’ll kill you. And don’t appear to be scared, either. You have to stand your ground, because if you seem scared then they’ll sense your weakness and they’ll take you down.”
And how does that apply to fame? Nicole explained, “[Adam] said, you approach this sort of thing with that in mind. Be yourself, be true to who you are, be strong, don’t be afraid, and don’t run away from it. I just thought that was really profound advice.”
And not only is Adam good at giving advice, but his contestants were shocked by how “normal” he is. Loren described her coach as “genuine” and lacking “cockiness.”
Nicole expanded on that thought, saying, “People think he’s a huge asshole, when he’s actually really not at all. In person, he sometimes goes out of his way to be very polite and very engaging and funny and disarming to sort of break that barrier right away. It’s pretty great.”
