Of the remaining Top 12 contestants on The Voice Season 3, there’s not doubt that Team Cee Lo’s Nicholas David is the most eccentric. From his shaggy beard, to, in the words of Blake Shelton, his “Jesus” look, Nicholas brings an old-school soul to the show that we haven’t seen before.

His rendition of Barry White’s “baby making” music on Wednesday night’s episode inspired America to vote him through to the Top 12, and the musician couldn’t be more pleased.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the soul singer after last night’s eliminations, and he was more than happy to talk about his journey thus far. Here’s what he had to say:

Wetpaint Entertainment: You made it to the top 12! How does it feel?

Nicholas David: Unreal. Unreal. I’m just trying to take it all in. It’s really wild.

What are you going to change about your strategy going into the next few weeks?

I really don’t know. I’m just going to keep listening to my heart and listening to my coach and see where that takes me because it’s led me this far.

Do you have any strategies on how to win America over?

I’m just going to keep my heart open and my mind open and see where it takes me.

Who were you most surprised to see eliminated tonight?

To be honest, with me it was really hard to see everybody eliminated because we’ve kind of become a family and it’s kind of hard to see your family go.

What’s the best thing that the coaches have taught you so far?

The best thing they’ve taught me is to just keep being myself because they’ve all responded to my uniqueness and who I am and even from Cee Lo’s own words, he says we’re cut from the same cloth so just to keep being myself.

So you’ve kind of got to learn to be a better performer and get the stage moves down?

A little bit yeah. I’ve been playing piano longer than I’ve been singing so I’m used to being behind my piano so it’s been something very new to be outside of that and to be out of the comfort zone.

Does it add and extra element of pressure that now people are voting you off and you have to win over the viewers?

Kind of but at the same time, I would have never have expected to be here. Everytime that I’m here, it keeps getting more awesome but on the flipside of it, it’s been super hard to be away from my family and super hard to be away from my kids so it’s like either way I think it’s awesome. I keep going “amazing!” but if this journey and this portion of it stops here, I’m going to keep playing music. I feel that I am music. I feel that I am here to be music and also I’ll get to spend time with my family who I miss immensely.

Were you shocked when [Cee Lo] picked you? Did you know that he was the coach that you were going to end up with?

Yeah. It was weird. I felt it in my bones. I really did. I didn’t really see anything else but Cee Lo.
