In Monday night’s battle round episode of The Voice Season 3, it was easy to forget Julio Cesar Castillo mostly due to the fact that the spotlight was on his teammate Terisa Griffin who took to the stage like a firecracker.
Fortunately, Julio’s coach Blake Shelton wasn’t willing to let one contestant outshine the other and ultimately named Julio the winner. But when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the mariachi singer after his battle, we learned that Blake wasn’t even his first choice.
“In my case I really wanted to choose Adam [Levine], but he didn’t choose me,” he told us. “It comes down to choosing whoever chooses you.”
Ouch! Is it just us or does it seem like Blake’s been pretty unwanted this season? But despite his original choice, Julio is more than grateful to be with the BS-er.
“Obviously, the coaches that turned around for you are the ones who saw something in you,” he continued. “At that moment you have to go with what the coaches say. For that reason I kinda chose Blake rather than Cee Lo because Blake seemed like he really wanted me and he was fighting for me.”
And Julio definitely needs someone on his side these days. Being the first contestant to ever perform a song entirely in Spanish on The Voice, he’s admitted that he’s received quite a bit of negative backlash.
“On my YouTube and Facebook I would get racial comments, but you’ve gotta ignore that and see the positives,” he said. “The way I see it, they say they’re not liking me and stuff, and they say all this racist stuff, but in reality they’re still thinking about me. And I’ve made some type of impression on them. They’re talking about me whether it’s bad or good. It’s still attention they’re giving me.”
We love Julio’s positive attitude and will to move forward in the competition! What do you think of Julio as a contestant on Team Blake? Weigh in below!
