Melanie Martinez is a quirky, young singer, and during last night’s live show on The Voice Season 3, she stepped outside of her mellow, indie box with Young the Giant’s “Cough Syrup.”

The Team Adam contestant, who is most widely recognized for her Cruella de Vil-inspired two-toned hairstyle, has endured some hardships in her life, but she doesn’t let that show on stage.

And when Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with her on the red carpet after last night’s performance, she seemed eager to move forward.

Wetpaint Entertainment: How do you feel about your performance?

Melanie Martinez: The song wasn't really in my comfort [zone], I guess, but I'm just happy that I did it and happy that I got it over with in a way. I'm just excited.

How do you come up with your song ideas?

It's kind of random. [Adam and I] just e-mail each other back and forth about songs we think would be good for me and we just hope for the best.

What do you hope to show America in your next performance?

I just want to show America a different side to me and kind of explore a little bit, but stay within who I am as an artist. I think the challenge is getting America to like me and vote for me. I'm just hoping.

Does it feel surreal to still be here after all these weeks?

Every single time. I still don't feel like it's happening. It's so surreal it's ridiculous.
