Monique Benabou was candid about the fact that she dropped out of school when she was introduced on Monday’s episode of The Voice.
Before she auditioned with a powerhouse version of Kelly Clarkson’s “Mr. Know It All,” Monique explained that her mother had gotten sick when she was a teen and she needed to stay home to take care of her, but that wasn’t the whole story.
Monique came clean that she was the victim of bullying in a recent NBC conference call.
“I was hated on so much in high school,” she confessed. “That was one of the reasons I dropped out … it was very depressing.”
Though she found her passion in theater junior year, she said that sudden popularity wasn’t enough to stop the teasing.
“They didn’t like that this underdog was getting popular,” Monique recalled of her tormentors.
She eventually returned to get her GED and it looks like despite her rocky start, the girl from Alameda, Calif., is slowly gaining the confidence needed to take on her competitors, due in no small part to her vocal coach, Christina Aguilera.
