Back in September, we were introduced to Trevin Hunte, a shy 18-year-old with a big voice, during his moving blind audition on The Voice Season 3. Today, he is in the show’s Top 4, with the potential to move even further in the competition.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the talented teen on the red carpet following his performance of “Wind Beneath My Wings” to talk about his trip home and the road ahead.

Wetpaint Entertainment: What was the best part about your hometown visit?

Trevin Hunte: Definitely going back and eating my mother’s home-cooked meals. I kind of missed them. Being here in California, I’ve just been eating a lot of junk food, so to go back to my family and taste all the food is definitely a great feeling.

Did she make all your favorites?

All my favorites: curry chicken, mac and cheese everything in the book.

It looks like your family had a party for you when you arrived. Were you surprised?

I was very surprised. I kind of felt like a little family reunion. It was definitely a great feeling to have all of my family — well, almost all of my family joined and packed up in one room.

Have they been getting together to watch the show?

Yeah they have, and they’ve been supporting me so much by buying my songs on iTunes and voting for me. To hear those types of things from people that you’ve lived your whole entire life with is a great feeling and definitely very emotional for me.

What was it like to get up in front of your middle school and inspire students?

I kind of felt more nervous being there at the school than being here at The Voice. It’s definitely a different feeling when you have a room full of people just chanting your name, and it was like, “Oh my god. This is for me?” That was the type of feeling that I was having, and I’m just happy that I got a chance to inspire those kids and just speak what was on my mind.

Did they ask you a lot of questions following your speech?

They asked me questions like, “What’s it like being on The Voice?” and “What motivated you to even audition for the show?” You know, those types of things. There were crazy moments with people saying, “I’m never going to wash my hand again,” and with them asking me for autographs. That was definitely a great feeling as well.

What’s the craziest question that they asked you?

They were just being kids. They were asking about Cee Lo’s pets and, “Is Christina [Aguilera] really a nice person?” Things like that.

What made you pick “Wind Beneath My Wings”?

I wanted to let my parents and my family know that they are my heroes. I set goals for myself every single week as I progress on the show, and my goal was to let my family know, Cee Lo know, and those kids that I inspired that they are my heroes, and I think that’s what I did.

Your feedback from the coaches was extremely positive. Are you still digesting that?

Oh yes. It’s always surreal for me — growing up just hearing bad comments about me with people saying that you’re not going to become anything and then coming on a show like this. It’s great to be given the opportunity to be on a stage like this, and it’s a great feeling to hear them say good stuff about me. I’m just so honored and happy.

What are you going to do to do to mentally and physically prepare for next week?

If I make it to next week, I’m just going to unwind, relax, not stress myself out, and just chill.
