On the Sept. 11 episode of The Voice Season 3, 19-year-old Mackenzie Bourg took to the stage, singing one of Blake Shelton’s favorites: “Pumped Up Kicks” by Foster the People.
Despite the song being on Blake’s ever-growing iTunes playlist, Cee Lo Green was the only judge to turn for this singer. But after all Mackenzie’s been through, he was incredibly grateful for the opportunity.
Almost two years ago, the singer contracted a virus that shut down his organs and caused his heart to fail. He was forced to go into an induced coma in front of his parents’ eyes.
“I was watching my son, literally just passing away,” Mackenzie’s father told host Carson Daly. “The amazing thing about it was that he made a promise to wake up before Super Bowl Sunday, and he woke up the night before.”
When Mackenzie woke up, he and his father watched some football and the Season 2 premiere of our favorite music reality competition show.
“It was a miracle that everything happened the way it did,” he said. “I know if that experience never happened, I wouldn’t be here.”
However painful the circumstances, we’re glad this Louisiana native is here today. And he’s already on his way to greatness, being compared to two of the top names in pop culture history: Harry Potter and Justin Bieber.
“Harry Potter meets Justin Bieber — a magical pop star,” Adam Levine declared.
