We started off the Sept. 17 episode of The Voice Season 3 with a melodic performance of Britney Spears’s “Toxic” from 17-year-old Melanie Martinez.

The New York native put her own folky spin on the pop hit with an acoustic guitar and tambourine for backup.

Melanie is a high school senior who whose biggest accolades up until this point included winning her high school talent show. But when she took to the stage, she impressed coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Cee Lo Green.

All of the judges commented on her eccentric look and creative sound. Her inventive remixes were reminiscent of Season 2 semi-finalist Lindsey Pavao from Team Christina.

The indie artist ultimately chose Team Adam and will advance to the battle rounds.
