Before Billie Joe found himself in hot water over remarks made at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in September, he hit all the right notes as the lead singer of the punk rock group Green Day.

The group, which he co-founded with elementary school friend, Mike Dirnt, found commercial success with their 1994 album,  Dookie, and have remained one of the most popular rock bands of the past twenty years, with over 60 million records sold worldwide. They became so popular in fact, that their 2009 hit album American Idiot became a musical on Broadway!

Away from the band, Billie Joe is a successful songwriter and artist. He has co-written for The Go-Go's,co-written a song with Rancid, and sung backing vocals on Ryan Adams' "Do Miss America." He also did a one week stint in the role of St. Jimmy in American Idiot, which went on to win two Tony awards.

Throughout his career, Armstrong has found himself in the celebrity news headlines, over issues ranging from gay marriage to alcoholism. Currently, he has checked himself into rehab following a number of incidents, which he has since attributed to his substance abuse problems.

Luckily, he was able to film his stint on The Voice before all of that occurred so we’ll get to see his vocal talents on the display. But most of all, we’re wishing Billie Joe a healthy and speedy recovery!
