In spring 2013, The Voice switched coaches for Season 4, bringing Usher and Shakira to join Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Original coaches Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green are taking this season off to further their own music careers.
But that doesn’t mean the talent level will be any lower. Season 4 premiered on Monday, March 25, 2013 on NBC and the first episode featured the coaches' first set of blind auditions.
Blind Auditions: The four celebrity coaches will be turned away from the contestants to focus solely on their voices. If a coach likes what he or she hears, they press their buttons and turn for the singer. If more than one coach turns, the contestant is then offered the unique opportunity to pick the coach of their choice.
Check out the contestants who made it through the 2013 blind auditions:
Week 1 (March 25): The Morgan Twins, Jess Kellner, Mark Andrew, Danielle Bradbery, Vedo, Christian Porter, Kris Thomas, Judith Hill
Week 1 (March 26): Tawnya Reynolds, Josiah Hawley, Midas Whale, Cáthia, Sarah Simmons
Week 2 (April 1): The Swon Brothers, Taylor Beckham, Karina Iglesias, Garrett Gardner, J’Sun, Chelsea M., Duncan Kamakana, Holly Tucker, Michelle Chamuel, Monique Abbadie, Warren Stone
Week 2 (April 2): Audrey Karrasch, Brandon Roush, Patrick Dodd, Trevor Davis, C. Perkins, Agina Alvarez, Orlando Dixon, Savannah Berry
Battle Rounds: Now on celebrity teams, contestants move on to the battle rounds. The coaches select two contestants to “battle” against one another on a song of the coach’s choice. Whoever wins the battle moves on to the next round and the losing contestant can be “stolen” by a different coach. Each coach is allowed two steals and if more than one coach opts to steal a contestant, the musician is once again given the opportunity to pick his or her coach.
Knockout Rounds: Before the contestants can move on to the live shows, they have to pass through the knockouts. Once again, the coaches pick two of their contestants to go head-to-head, but this time each gets to sing his or her own song. The coach decides who moves on and the teams are reduced by half the contestants. In the past, some surprising wins and losses have come out of the knockouts. In Season 3, lesser-known country singer Cody Belew beat out fan favorite Avery Wilson on Team Cee Lo Green after Avery made a weak song choice.
Live Shows: After weeks of coach involvement, it’s all in America’s hands now. The remaining contestants perform each week for a shot at continued exposure and a place in the Final 3. There used to be a rule that one contestant from each team was guaranteed a spot in the finals, but that rule was eliminated in Season 3. Only Team Blake and Team Cee Lo were represented in Season 3’s Final 3 contestant pool.
