We’re not exactly unfamiliar with Stacy Francis’s diva-esque tendencies, but things are taking a turn for the mind-boggling this week vis-à-vis the former X Factor contestant’s recent altercation with the late Whitney Houston.
You may recall our mentioning how sorry Stacy was for the whole imbroglio, but new Francis testimony has emerged. Indeed, it looks like Francis’s top priority is defending herself — and we can’t say we blame her, but still. It’s Whitney Houston we’re talking about! That should make a difference, right?
Francis told The Daily Mirror that on the night of the fireworks, Houston “was out of control. … She just went crazy — like Jekyll and Hyde.” Ever sympathetic, Francis at the time begged Houston to get a grip: “Please don’t do this. You’re everything to me. You’re my idol, you’re a legend.”
What made Whitney go so allegedly nuts? Well, we talked before about Houston’s rage over Francis chatting with Houston’s boyfriend Ray J, but it sounds like the pop legend needed some liquid courage to really get going. “There was a lot of alcohol there,” Francis said. “She was doing shots.”
So why’s Francis shouting from the mountaintops on this issue? Perish the thought of publicity as a motivator, she says — it’s really about “raising awareness.” To wit, “[i]t’s so sad to see our icons die like this. … It’s very difficult for anybody to say anything that puts her in a bad light, but when I heard Whitney was gone I felt she had been badly let down. I felt like everyone had betrayed her.”
We’re not sure how dishing on one of Houston’s more embarrassing last moments is anything but a betrayal — maybe a brief, one-time statement would be more tasteful? — and we daresay there’s more than enough awareness on the “death of Houston” issue as it is. But then, sometimes we’re at a loss as to how to handle news like this. After all, is Stacy the bad guy for dishing, or is Whitney the bad guy for losing her temper in the first place? What do you think?
