When Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev met on the set of The Vampire Diaries five years ago, they had no idea what they were getting into. Not only would the duo transform into overnight stars with the success of the vampy CW drama, but they also found love with each other through the years.
Though Ian and Nina ended their three-year relationship back in May 2013, they are rumored to be hooking up again, perhaps on the road to reuniting officially. In addition to a source dishing about them getting “hot and heavy,” they were visibly touchy-feely on the red carpet of TVD’s 100th episode, hugging and gazing into each other’s eyes adorably in full view of the cameras.
So, to celebrate their reunion — whether the rumors are true or not — we’re taking a trip down memory lane. After giving you a full relationship timeline of these two, it’s time to just look at them way back in 2009 and then again in 2013.
In the photo on the left, taken at the 2009 CW Upfronts, they were pictured as a cast for the first time. (It was taken in May 2009, and the show premiered in September 2009.) Nina was the ripe ol’ age of 20 at the time and looked wide-eyed and innocent but still gorgeous in a strapless white dress and matching peep-toe pumps. Her hair is wavy and long, and everything about her looks so teeny tiny. Ian is rocking his signature fedora and a loose black suit with just a white tee underneath and no tie. He’s spiffed up a bit since then.
The photo on the right shows Ian and Nina four years later at 2013 Comic-Con. This was just after their breakup was announced in May 2013 — the pic was taken in July 2013 — and they clearly were happy to be together as friends. In this adorable photoshoot pic, she is rockin’ a gorgeous orange-and-black-striped dress and black pumps, while Ian went casual with a V-neck gray shirt and dark jeans.
It’s not about their outfits, though — four years later, they look more mature, a little older, and totally in their element. And now that their show is more successful than ever and their characters Damon and Elena are together on-screen, it makes sense for them to get back together and have a happily ever after off-screen, too.
