Ian Somerhalder Reveals Shocking Story Behind Dog Nietzsche’s Pregnancy

Ian Somerhalder has had a crazy month. In addition to his hit CW show, The Vampire Diaries, premiering its fifth season, his dog Nietzsche — whom he adopted a few months agogave birth to a litter of adorable puppies!

However, it wasn’t a joyous occasion when he first found out about his grandpups-to-be. Ian’s assistant had taken Nietz to get spayed, but instead, they discovered that she was almost ready to give birth.

“My assistant calls and goes, ‘Are you sitting down?’” he recalled on LIVE! With Kelly and Michael on October 17. “I said, ‘No. Don’t tell me the dog died, the anesthesia, something. I went to the bad parent place.’”

While this would ordinarily be good news, the way that they found out she was carrying the pups is shocking and horrifying.

“They opened her up to spay her and there were all these little puppies in there,” he revealed, adding that the vets were like, “Sew her up! Close her, close her!” From there, she was sutured up, but the surgeons told them, “If you see a paw or anything come out, just push it back and bring her here.” Umm, what? That’s terrifying.

Thankfully, all the pups were born healthy, and Ian recently shared a video of them feeding. He’s the “proud dad of seven dogs” now, and he even shared that he’s “had a premonition about this dog since I was 16.” Sounds like it was meant to be.
