Tina Fey Remembers Elaine Stritch: “She Was a Tough Old Bird”

While people all over the world are devastated by the passing of Broadway legend Elaine Stritch this week, someone who’s especially heartbroken to lose such an accomplished actress and special lady is Tina Fey. Tina developed a close relationship with Elaine during her time on 30 Rock, where she played Alec Baldwin’s mother on 30 Rock.

And like many people who knew her, Tina has nothing but positive things to say about what it was like to work with Elaine, who died at her Michigan home yesterday at 89 years old.

“Elaine was a tough old bird, but I suspect she may have been a tough old bird since birth,” Tina told People. “I loved her voice, her timing, her stories, her natural elegance.”

While one of Elaine’s most recent roles was playing Jack Donaghy’s mother, her career spanned 70 years, including plays, musicals, and movies. She also nabbed multiple Tony Award nominations and was the subject of a documentary about her life, called Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me.

“One day, she was wearing a beautiful butterfly cocktail ring, and when I admired it, she gave it to me on the spot — like an Arab sheik in black pantyhose,” Tina shared. “I feel very lucky to have worked with her as much as I did.”

Rest in peace, Elaine. You’ll be missed!
