Little People, Big World’s Matt and Amy Roloff Separate After 26 Years Together (VIDEO)

You may want to take a seat if you’re a fan of TLC’s Little People, Big World. The reality show’s focal couple, Matt and Amy Roloff, have just announced that they are separating after 26 long years together. The silver lining? They’re still on great terms and it’s not a done deal just yet.

"Though we have weathered many storms together, we recently made the tough decision to engage in a trial separation," they tell People this week. "Matt remains living on the farm in our guest house and we work together everyday on the farm, on our business endeavors and most importantly, raising our amazing children."

Avid viewers of the series know Matt and Amy as the loving parents of four children: twins Jeremy and Zack, 23, Molly, 20, and Jacob, 17. The program follows the daily life of the family, which includes three people with dwarfism (both parents and twin Zack), and three of average height. But as much as the family has experienced its happy times, they’ve also endured their share of hardship in recent years.

"Last year it was long and tough," Matt says in a clip for a new TLC special. "Amy and I had a lot of tension so right around Thanksgiving. I thought I would move over to the bridal house for a little bit and we'll try that. Amy and I stuck it out for years and years when maybe we shouldn't have. I never quite felt at home in my own home so something needed to change. We needed to try something different."

Amy seconds her husband’s sentiments that cohabitation has been difficult, though she doesn’t like seeing him leave the home.

"I think what Matt and I failed to do over many, many years is learned to live together," says Amy. "It's not my choice for him to leave. I am saddened by it. We don't have a plan as far as how we are going to work this out so it's not going to be easy."

And as difficult as it may be for the family, at least they have the love and support of their millions of fans — which they greatly appreciate.

"We sincerely appreciate the unwavering support, understanding and prayers from our family, friends and many fans. May God bless you."

The Little People, Big World special airs March 25 at 9 p.m. on TLC.
