TLC’s ‘Little Couple’ Defends Their Double Adoption

Bill Klein and Jen Arnold, the stars of TLC Network’s hit show The Little Couple, have been through a lot on their journey to welcome a child into their family. Their most recent move to adopt not one, but two children, at seemingly the same time, has most viewers cheering for joy but a few up in arms.

Jennifer, a neonatologist at Texas Children’s Hospital and assistant professor of pediatrics-neonatology at Baylor College of Medicine, made the decision a while ago not to attempt to undergo a natural pregnancy because both she and her husband Bill have dwarfism.

“We opted for surrogacy because we wanted to avoid the possible risks and complications of carrying a pregnancy given my short stature and small size,” Jen told Yahoo Health back in February of 2013.

Instead, they chose to deliver a child with the help of a surrogate. After waiting over a year for their doctor to obtain just two eggs, due to a complication with Jen’s misplaced ovaries, the resulting embryo was placed inside a surrogate in November of 2011. Tragically, the surrogate suffered a miscarriage, and Jen and Bill’s world came once again to a standstill.

Their next option was adoption. According to The Wrap, the couple had placed themselves on a waiting list with Little People of America, which works with agencies when they need to place a child with dwarfism or skeletal dysplasia. While they waited for a response, they discovered on their own a little Chinese orphan named William, with whom they fell in love and were able to successfully adopt over the period of about 11 months.

Their family was finally whole, but their names remained on the LPA waiting list until one day they received a call saying they were next and that they had a 19-month-old girl named Zoe from India who was in need of adoption.

"I always wanted a little girl, too," Jen told The Wrap. "We always thought we wanted two kids in general. What were we going to do, say no? No, of course not. We decided, let’s do it. If we’re going to have our two kids, hopefully, and this will be it. So that’s actually how it all played out. It wasn’t that we intended to, or tried to, adopt two children at one time. It’s just how the stars aligned, really."

Since the news broke that the couple was adopting two instead of one, they say they have received mostly congratulations, but some criticism.

"It’s all been positive,” Jen said, “I mean, a few crazy people, but mostly comments on how crazy it is to be adopting two kids at once, but we are. That being said, we’re happy crazy."
