Top 5 Emily and Paige Moments on Pretty Little Liars

From the looks of it, this week’s episode of Pretty Little Liars is going to feature some Paily scenes for the ages. We’ve already gotten a sneak peek at this melancholic coffee shop scene, and we know Season 4, Episode 19 (“Shadow Play”) will include a steamy make out, but how will these moments rank in our favorite Paige (Lindsey Shaw) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) scenes of all time? In preparation for that question, we list our top five Paily moments so far...

Everything Is Going to Change (Season 1, Episode 20)

In Season 1, both Paige and Emily struggled with how to come out to their friends and family. For Paige, it happened a little later than Emily, and she looked to Em for advice. After Paige went out on a date with a boy, she showed up at Em’s house upset. “If I say it, out loud — if I say ‘I’m gay’ — everything is going to change,” Paige said through tears. And Emily smiled and said, “Yeah. It will.” This was the moment we realized how great these two are together.

Don’t Look Away (Season 3, Episode 8)

The Paily we know and love today was a long time coming. Even though they felt a pull to be together in Season 1, Paige wasn’t ready to be with Emily in public and Em didn’t want to go back into the shadows. So, their eventual reconciliation in Season 3 was pretty epic. As Emily is trying to piece together the night someone drugged her and she dug up Ali’s grave, she discovers that she went to Paige’s house. Paige, not realizing that Em had been drugged that night, feels like she took advantage of her. They have a poolside chat, and Emily tells her: “I was drunk that night, and I got lost. Only I didn’t really get lost. I was looking for something. I was looking for somebody. And I came here.” Paige tries to turn away, but Emily won’t let her. "Don’t look away,” she tells Paige, before pulling her in for a kiss.

Sometimes, When Nobody’s Looking, Things Work Out (Season 3, Episode 13)

The Season 3 Halloween special was near perfect in every way — and that included this quiet scene between a costumed Emily and Paige — aka Barbarella and Three Piece-Suited Paige. In it, both girls confess how they can’t quite believe their luck in finding one another. Emily tells Paige: “Sometimes, when nobody’s looking, things work out.” This was a relatively short and subtle scene, but it felt particularly poignant given everything Emily has gone through. Even after losing her first two loves — Alison and Maya — Emily has found happiness with Paige.

We Can Find Another Dream (Season 4, Episode 4)

Emily’s life falls apart a little bit in Season 4. She hurts her shoulder saving Mona and Aria from “A”’s lead foot, and with it her potential future in swimming. Eventually, she fesses up everything that has been going on to Paige. “Em, we can find another dream,” Paige tells Emily, making sure she knows that she doesn’t care as much about their future swimming together as their future together, full stop. “All these terrible things in my life right now, how do I feel so lucky?” Em asks her. The two walk back to Emily’s house hand-in-hand, and it is all kinds of adorable.

Three Thousand Miles Is a Long Way (Season 4, Episode 9)

We hate to leave you on such a bittersweet note, but the difficult conversation Paily has on the dock in Season 4, Episode 9 is one of our all-time favorites, despite the tragic tone. In it, Emily and Paige face the reality that they probably won’t be in the same place next year — or, perhaps, for the next four years. “What do you think’s gonna happen if I don’t go to Stanford with you?” Emily asks Paige.

“Three thousand miles is a long way. Four years is a long time. A lot can happen,” Paige tells her, and the two cry together on the dock. Though this scene is a sad one, it demonstrates just how much these two love one another — and just how great Lindsey and Shay are in these roles.
