Tracee Ellis Ross Addresses Controversy Surrounding ‘Black-ish’ Salary

UPDATE (1/22/18 at 10:29 a.m. ET):

Tracee Ellis Ross is addressing the controversy surrounding her Black-ish salary.

“There has been a lot of conversation and speculation the last few days regarding my Black-ish salary,” she wrote on Saturday, January 20.

“I was in a renegotiation, like many actors find themselves in during the fourth season of a successful show.”

She continued, “I wanted to be compensated in a way that matches my contribution to a show that I love for many reasons, including the opportunity it allows me to reshape what it is to be a fully realized black woman on TV.”

“The words and thoughts that were in the original article that started this public conversation were not mine; there were never any threats,” she shared.

“I wish I would have been called by the reporter to confirm that.”

She continued, “Having had my renegotiation become a public conversation was awkward, but I’m grateful for the outpouring of support.

“I’m truly thankful that important conversations are taking place about fighting for women’s worth and equality, and tightening the pay gap in every industry.”

 Original story (1/19/18 at 12:37 p.m. ET):

Tracee Ellis Ross is coming for her money, or else!

The Black-ish star is reportedly making significantly less than her co-star Anthony Anderson.

In fact, the actress is supposedly threatening to cut back her time on the show if her upcoming contract isn’t fair.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the 45-year-old may just appear as a guest star on the show.

“With negotiations for the fifth season ongoing, sources say Ellis Ross feels that if she isn’t brought up to Anderson’s level, she may opt to appear in fewer episodes to make up the disparity by guesting on another show,” a source revealed.

“The tactic has split opinions within Time’s Up, with some worried that it’s more a retreat than a forward-looking solution (fitting in extra work isn’t always feasible, and often an actress wouldn’t earn as much guesting as she would as a network star).”

Sources also say Anthony makes more than Tracee because their roles on the show are very different.

Also, the 47-year-old is an executive producer of the show.

“A network source says a new deal will significantly increase her compensation and cautioned that Anderson and Ellis Ross’ roles aren’t equal given that he has been attached to Black-ish from the start and is an executive producer,” the report stated.

Fans spoke out about the wage disparity on social media and many have differing opinions.

“I don’t blame Mo’Nique for boycotting Netflix and I don’t blame Tracee Ellis Ross for threatening to leave Blackish,” one person wrote.

“If you aren’t viewed as valuable because of your gender or skin color, you most likely would react the same way.”

Somebody else added, “There is no Blackish without Tracee Ellis Ross.”

Another person wrote, “Anthony Anderson is more famous and has earn is pay throughout his career [sic].

“It’s not about men n women I only knew Tracee Ellis Ross from girlfriends before blackish if Halle Berry was on the show she would probably be paid more than Anthony or the same [sic].”
