The Bachelorette’s Trista and Ryan Sutter: A Relationship Timeline

Behold the golden couple! We first met Trista Rehn almost 12 years ago, and you could credit (or blame, if that’s your style) her fairy tale romance with Ryan Sutter as a chief reason why viewers have kept on coming back for 18 seasons of The Bachelor and nine of The Bachelorette.

The Sutters marked the first “success” story of ABC’s franchise and they’re still the couple everyone turns to for advice on how to turn reality TV love into real love. Trista and Ryan just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary this past December, and we get to watch them renew their vows this Sunday on The Bachelor: Love Stories.

"The way we got together is so not normal," Trista, 41, told People in a new January 2014 cover story. "But we do live a normal life. Yes, we met in a fantastical way, but it's really what we did after the show that mattered." What she did was move to Ryan’s native Colorado, with the 39-year-old hottie working as a firefighter as they raise their two children.

Take a walk down memory lane to relive some key dates in their journey, then prepare to get misty-eyed as we watch them get all schmoopy again on TV on January 19.

Former Miami Heat dancer Trista Rehn made her big debut on The Bachelor Season 1 premiere. Alex Michel failed to realize her full potential, and let her go in the end. As the runner-up, she was the obvious choice for ABC’s spin-off show, The Bachelorette, in its first season.

Trista’s Bachelorette premiere introduced us to sensitive Colorado fireman/poet Ryan Sutter … and a bunch of other guys, but she was mostly into Ry-guy. Can you blame her?

Trista chose Ryan over Charlie Mayer and ABC estimates that 30 million viewers tuned in to watch at least part of that Bachelorette Season 1 finale. Re-watch Ryan propose to Trista. Sigh. Those first guitar notes send us right back to that night...

December 6, 2003
Trista became Mrs. Sutter on December 6, 2003. ABC aired a whole three-part Trista & Ryan's Wedding special with more than 17 million viewers watching the final part. According to People, the wedding cost $4 million and Trista and Ryan were paid $1 million. Watch this video to relive the moment when they're pronounced husband and wife and have their first kiss as the Sutters.

Trista and Ryan welcome their first child, son Maxwell Alston, on this day in Vail, Colorado. The little guy was 5 lbs, 3 oz. Max was actually born four weeks early due to complications with Trista's pregnancy, including preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

April 3, 2009
Max got a little sister when the Sutters welcomed daughter Blakesley Grace. She was delivered via C-section, weighing 6 lbs., 2 oz.

Two kids — one boy, one girl — were enough for the Sutters. Trista announced her plans to get the Essure permanent birth control procedure, and she talked about the decision on Lifetime's The Balancing Act.

On this day, Trista released her book, Happily Ever After: The Life-Changing Power of a Grateful Heart. Here’s a rave review from Chris Harrison himself: “We call Trista the ‘godmother’ of the Bachelor franchise for a reason. She stands for everything that’s good about our show and life—and that shines through in her book. After reading Happily Ever After, I’m even more proud to call her my friend.” Aww!

December 12, 2013
Right after celebrating their 10th anniversary, and just before renewing their vows, Trista and Ryan were announced as part of the cast for Marriage Boot Camp, which will air on WE TV in early summer 2014. Even though they seem perfect, Trista has admitted she and Ryan have trouble communicating. Just yell, doesn’t that work for other couples?

December 14, 2013
To mark their 10th anniversary (or at least the month), Trista and Ryan renewed their vows in a small ceremony in Vail, which they allowed to be filmed for ABC.

Sunday, January 19
The Bachelor: Love Stories special will air from 8 to 9 p.m. ET, and that’s when we’ll see Trista and Sutter say those round two “I do”s from last month. The special will show viewers the Sutters’ “continued devotion to each other with an extremely moving vow renewal ceremony.” Then Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici will try to make us cry even harder with their own televised wedding the following week, on January 26.

Can you believe Trista and Ryan have lasted this long? Did you always know they’d still be together — with two kids — 10 years later? Do you think we’ll get another update from them 10 years from now?
