After much thought and consideration, Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario (Spencer) decided that honesty was the best policy when it came to her recent heartfelt interview with Seventeen magazine.

In the interview, Troian revealed that she struggled with self-harm and eating disorders in high school and that she still struggles with perfectionism to this day. When asked how she found the strength to share her pain, the actress told E! News that she came clean for her young fans.

"I knew that going into an article that was going to be the cover of Seventeen they were going to ask me, 'What was your life like when you were 17?' So I had to make the choice of do I just completely lie and say my life was great and totally perfect?” Troian said. "And is that really gonna help the men and women out there who watch my show who are 17? Is that gonna help? Or is gonna be better for me to be honest and do something a little bit scarier and try to talk a little bit about that? I kinda made a choice and now I'm going with it.”

Not only did Troian’s admission help her connect to fans going through similar issues, it also helps her relate to her PLL character.

"The character, Spencer, is a perfectionist and you see how incredibly flawed she is. That's kinda why I think everybody really loves Spencer, that she's always trying to be perfect and she is always failing. And that really was my experience as an adolescent, as a 17-year-old," she said. "I felt like I just wanted to put on this perfect front to the world and I was just feeling so different inside, and I think that's why I really relate to Spencer and I think that's why the fans really relate to her and that's why they kinda relate to me coming out and talking about this."
