The hills are alive with the sound of Moyer.

True Blood star Stephen Moyer will star as Captain von Trapp in NBC’s Sound of Music telecast opposite Carrie Underwood, the network announced today. This is only the second casting so far, though the von Trapp children will likely follow shortly. It remains to be seen if those roles will also go to known celebrities, too.

For those unfamiliar (though we sincerely doubt there’s anyone who doesn’t love the classic musical-turned-beloved-film), Georg von Trapp is the single father of seven children, living in Austria on the cusp of World War II. After hiring a young governess named Maria (played by Carrie) to take care of his kids, she steals his heart. We won’t spoil the rest, but it’s one of the greatest love stories of all time — plus, Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer won five Oscars for their portrayals in the 1965 film version. (Notably, the telecast will be based on the original 1959 Broadway production, though.)

Smash producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are behind the show, and the three-hour live broadcast is scheduled to air on December 5. Though Stephen isn’t known for his musical prowess, he recently starred in the Hollywood Bowl production of Chicago. Coincidentally, Craig and Neil also helmed the film version of that famed musical, too. Basically, Stephen was born to play this role.

While we would have appreciated Stephen and real-life wife Anna Paquin playing the von Trapps, we have to admit that Carrie is probably a better fit. American Idol meets True Blood? Now those are a few of our favorite things.
