As much as we hate to see True Blood creator Alan Ball leave the HBO show for other opportunities, we have to say that that other opportunity, his new Cinemax show Banshee, looks awesome.

In the trailer, we see ex-con Lucas Hood (Aussie actor Antony Starr) enter Banshee, Pennsylvania, and assume the role of sheriff, butting heads with the community’s crime boss, Kai Proctor (Ulrich Thomsen).

We also get the sense that Lucas lost a woman he loved in a botched heist. And he seems to have romantic ties to a local woman, Carrie Hopewell (Casino Royale’s Ivana Milicevic), who didn’t wait for him during his 15-year incarceration.

Further compounding the tension is the fact that he’s still being hunted by another crime boss, Mr. Rabbit (Star Trek’s Ben Cross), whom he inadvertently leads straight to Carrie and her new family.

Gunshots, explosions, and hand-to-hand combat ensues — some of which involves a hairless Albino, some of which involves a particularly badass-looking bald woman.

All told, it looks like a wild ride, like a bastardized version of Justified. So you can be sure we’re gonna check it out when it premieres on Friday, January 11 at 10 PM E.T. on Cinemax.

And with Alan Ball as executive producer, you know it’s probably gonna be appointment TV.
