Rumors are flying that among the dead in Season 6 is Alexander Skarsgard’s character Eric Northman, a thousand-year-old vampire and former viking who has been in the series since the first book and the fourth episode. Unfortunately, TVLine’s latest spoiler roundup provides next to no comfort — they just can’t say for sure.

“Such a twist is in the realm of possibility,” teases TV Line’s Michael Ausiello. He points to two hints from previous True Blood coverage.

One is simple: Episode 7’s title, “The Funeral,” which doesn’t tell us much in a show about the undead with frequent flashbacks.

The second is a little meatier. Fellow cast member Joe Manganiello, who plays werewolf (and new pack leader!) Alcide Herveaux on the series, does confirm that there will be some major death in Season 6: “We’re getting to the point in the season now where people are starting to die. The table reads are starting to get smaller, and I’m sure they will continue to do that.” (On a side note, Alcide apparently gets pretty juicy this season!)

So we don’t know for sure if we’ll be seeing the last of Eric, but we have a couple of speculations of our own. Book spoilers ahead!

1. In the currently-published books, Eric remains as alive as a vampire can be. Score one for Eric staying alive!

2. On the other hand, Alexander Skarsgard has been ramping up his film acting career lately, starring alongside the likes of Julianne Moore, Jason Bateman, and Ellen Page. True Blood doesn’t always stay true to the novels — it’s possible that he requested that Eric be killed off.

What do you think? Is Season 6 the end of the road for Eric?

Season 6 starts Sunday, June 16 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
