How much did you love the music in last night’s episode of True Blood? It was bloody amazing — all thanks to True Blood’s music supervisor and KCRW DJ, Gary Calamar. Part of Gary’s enviable job is tracking down songs that match True Blood’s episode titles, and in the case of last night’s premiere, Gary pulled out all the stops.

“She’s Not There” is originally a song by the British invasion band The Zombies, but Gary decided to take things one step further and re-record the track with a southern twist: “The show’s creator Alan Ball gave me his blessing and I was off and running. The brainstorming began. I spread the word. I spoke with one of my friends CC Adcock, the great Louisiana musician and producer about it and he came up with a new arrangement for the song, more dark and sexy. We thought it would be great to make it a sly duet between a man and woman.”

Gary came up with the idea of a collaboration between Neko Case (of The New Pornographers) and Nick Cave when he was perusing the “C” section of his CD collection: “Suddenly something magical happened. My eyes took a little trip further down the C section. Neko Case practically jumped into my arms and whispered, 'I’ll do it, call me, let’s talk about "She’s Not There" for True Blood.'"

He continued, "Then, the second bolt of lightning hit me: Nick Cave. I had to sit down and catch my breath imaging this duet with Neko Case and Nick Cave.”

Obviously, Neko and Nick jumped at the chance to record a song for True Blood (who wouldn’t?) and voila! Magic was born.
