True Blood Star Denis O’Hare’s Shocking Emmy Moment!
Russell Edgington is known for shocking True Blood viewers with bloody deaths and chilling one-liners, but his portrayer, Denis O’Hare, was recently on the receiving end of a shocking moment — when he was nominated for an Emmy.
Denis almost didn’t pick up that early morning phone call, thinking it was a solicitor, but when his agent finally got through to him, he assumed the worst.
"The first thing I thought of was, 'Somebody's dead.' I'm Irish. I was like, 'Who's dead? Who is it? Somebody I know? Or did I get fired? Is it something bad?'" Denis told The Republic. "He goes, 'You were nominated for an Emmy.' I was completely floored."
While this first-time nomination — the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries — is for his American Horror Story character, Larry, he likely took some traits from that character while playing rapidly-decaying Russell on True Blood Season 5!
And the former vampire king is “incredibly grateful” for his success, especially since it was so unexpected.
"True Blood definitely put me on the map in a way I didn't expect," Denis said. "It comes down to numbers. Five million people watch True Blood every week. Factor in the repeats and DVD sales and global audiences and then fan sites — suddenly, you're reaching 20 million people, 30 million people. That's really crazy."
