Alexander Skarsgard has been playing Eric Northman on True Blood for six years now, so he is understandably a bit burnt out.

While doing press for his new film, What Maisie Knew, A. Skars talked about selecting his roles, explaining that he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into one type of character.

“If I feel like it’s something I’ve done before, then what’s the incentive for me to do it?” he spilled in The New York Times’ Toronto Film Festival Q&A. “That’s why, after playing Eric Northman for seven months shooting a season, I don’t want to play Eric Northman in a movie, but just without fangs. I want to try new things.”

And those new things include a new genre: comedy. Although Eric has delivered some snarky one-liners over the years, he admittedly isn’t exactly Bon Temps’ resident jokester, but Alex did kick off his American career with Zoolander!

When asked if he would try doing a comedy, Alex was completely on board.

“Yeah, absolutely. I’ve done that in Sweden before,” he said. “My first film out here was actually a comedy, Zoolander, many years ago. I had a small part in that. But I’d love that. It’s different, and something I haven’t done in a while.”

But at the end of the day, it isn’t about the genre or the actors involved in a potential film — for Alexander, it’s all about being inspired by the script.

“To me, it’s all about inspiration. What gets me creatively excited is a challenge. There’s gotta be a discovery,” he admitted. “When I read a script and have my first interaction with this character, do I feel like there’s something I’m gonna learn here? If I feel like it’s something I’ve done before, then what’s the incentive for me to do it?”
