Nelsan Ellis has been keeping busy during True Blood’s hiatus. In addition to recording a spoken word track and making his directorial debut with Hoodoo Love in Chicago, he also stepped into some big shoes, playing an iconic historical figure.

While filming The Butler, Nelsan took on the daunting task of playing Martin Luther King, Jr.ditching Lafayette’s drag and apron in favor of a suit and tie.

“It's completely unnerving and mind-boggling because you have to play a character that is so widely known and the expectation is to get it right,” he told Huffington Post. “I don't know if I got it right.”

But it wasn’t just getting the portrayal down pat — it was also working with an all-star cast.

“I was working with all these Oscar winners and that was definitely unnerving to be in a scene with Forest Whitaker and Liev Schreiber, with Cuba Gooding Jr. and Lenny Kravitz and Terrence Howard,” he added. “And then Oprah walks by and it was like, uh, OK.”

But Nelsan didn’t lose his cool. However, he did admit that he slips into his True Blood character unintentionally on a daily basis.

“I'll do a hand thing or, just yesterday, I started into it while I was directing,” he admitted. “I've played the character for five years now and it still absolutely leaks into my life.”

And although he knows absolutely nothing about Season 6, he did share a hilarious story about fan recognition.

“It it gets weird when a woman comes up with her husband and says, ‘Just call me 'bitch,' call me 'hooker!’ Her husband says it's OK and you can do it, but it's a little weird in that respect.”
