After the shocking True Blood Season 5 finale, everyone was worried about Bill Compton.

Well, everyone except for portrayer Stephen Moyer.

Even though Billith’s bloody rise in the final seconds of the episode was cause for alarm, Stephen wasn’t thinking about the fans’ horrified reactions as he bared his fangs; in fact, he was purposely blocking out any perceptions of Bill throughout the season.

“One has to stop worrying about how one’s character is perceived. I think we all probably had a point in the series where you did worry about the public persona of our character. But I stopped worrying about that in Season 2,” Stephen spilled to TVLine.

In a previous finale interview, he admitted that if it’s “dramatically compelling and fun and great to watch,” he wouldn’t rule out Bill harming — or perhaps even turning — Sookie. But considering how intense the fans’ backlash would be to that storyline, he may have a change of heart.

“That’s not to say I don’t care,” he continued. “What I mean is you’re going to stop playing something authentically if you’re worried about how it’s going to be perceived.”

But his performance was completely authentic, even showcasing Bill’s vulnerable side.

“One of the things I wanted to do was show fear in Bill’s eyes,” Stephen added. “Show that he’s absolutely clear that what he’s doing is the right thing until it starts to happen, and then we see the vulnerability in him of, 'F—, what have I done?' And that was something I hope comes across.”
