Sam Merlotte was adopted as a child by parents who abandoned him after discovering his knack for taking on other animal forms. Shapeshifter Sam is a well-respected member of Bon Temps and the owner of Merlotte’s Bar, a cornerstone of the small town. Sam has long been in love with Sookie Stackhouse, and reveals his shapeshifting abilities to her early on. Though Sookie has a special affection for Sam, she does not return his romantic feelings. Sam became involved in a relationship of convenience with Tara Thornton and then later with newcomer and shapeshifter Daphne, who in the end betrayed him.
