Neil Patrick Harris Turned Down the Late Show And the Late Late Show (VIDEO)

Imagine this scenario: Neil Patrick Harris. Cracking jokes. On TV. Every single night. Sounds amazing, right? It almost happened.

When the former How I Met Your Mother star chatted with Howard Stern this week, he revealed that he was in unofficial talks to take over for David Letterman when he retires at the end of this year (before they found replacement Stephen Colbert), but Neil ended up deciding against taking the new job.

“They called me in and sat me down and asked if that would be something I’d be interested in doing,” Neil admitted. The head honchos attempted to wine and dine Neil with sushi and sweet talk, but he just wasn’t up for the gig. Part of the conversation was the later Late Late show that would require filling Craig Ferguson’s shoes, but Neil said not to that, too.

“I sat for a minute with it while I was talking to him and I told him the things that concerned me about the longevity of that kind of gig,” Neil explained. “That I think I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure of it is so set that I don’t have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, musical act, goodnight.”

So instead, Neil pitched a weekly variety show, which would allow him to change things up a bit and sounds like more fun to him. So what did CBS say? They’re interested, which is a good sign. Could end up happening!

Good for Neil for being choosy about which projects he takes on, no matter how prestigious that Late Show desk might be. The world is yours, Neil! Go get it!
