Dawson Leery of Dawson's Creek was one of the most adorable TV crushes of the '90s. But even if you were on his side of the eternal Dawson vs. Pacey war, Dawson, played by James Van Der Beek, he did get pretty obnoxious sometimes — and not just because of his ugly cry.
Now, even James himself admits it! In an interview with HuffPost Live, he told host Ricky Camilleri that while he liked playing a super-romantic Dawson "at times," conceding "other times he annoyed the s--t out of me."
The host agreed, adding that Dawson's obsession with director Steven Spielberg was "really strange," which prompted some big laughs from James.
"That's hilarious," James acknowledges — but he adds that there's something charming about Dawson's weird obsession.
"I think what I liked at the time is this guy was passionate about something that not most teenagers were passionate about. And that I related to and I was acting and i was going into New York City when I was 15 years old, and doing plays in New York, and none of my friends were doing that," continues James. "So I think what I related to about the Dawson character is he had this thing that was his. He had it down to a science, and it was very specific — and it was authentic, because [Dawson's Creek and Vampire Diaries writer] Kevin Williamson loved Steven Spielberg."
It's good to know that Spielberg obsession came from somewhere — even if Dawson was, at times, a total dork.
