Fans of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette have always watched the show with one eye on the roses, and one looking for clues that the relationships are the real thing. And while we all think we know what’s really going on behind the scenes, the reality is that they’re fun shows and we’re happy to have them in our lives. In fact, we want as much of those shows as possible, so we’re especially curious about a new drama being developed with the premise of these dating shows in mind.

Deadline reports that Shiri Appleby is set to star in a new Lifetime pilot called Unreal. The brunette came onto our radar back in1999 as alien lover Liz Parker on Roswell, and was most recently spotted as Natalia on Girls.

The concept of the show is one that should tug at some familiar strings, especially if you’ve been tuning in to Jason and Molly Mesnick’s podcast, “This Is Reality.” Shiri plays a young staffer whose “sole job is to manipulate her relationships with (and among) the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage the program’s producers demand.”

Yikes. We’re not sure how she did her research for the role, but the in-the-works show is based on Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s award-winning 20-minute short, Sequin Raze. In the original version, Pitch Perfect’s Anna Camp plays beauty queen Jessica who is being manipulated by staffer Rebecca Goldberg (Ashley Williams) in an effort to capture the emotion and soundbites the producers want. It premiered at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival.

The television drama does not yet have a scheduled pilot date, but we’re pretty excited to see what they do with the excellent concept. Will you watch?
