Premium cable shows like Homeland may have some of the best writing and acting in all of television, but there are some downsides to loving these critical darlings. For one, there seems to be a much higher chance that your favorite characters will be knocked off way before we’re ready to say goodbye. And If you think any character on Homeland is safe, maybe you need to go back and watch the end of Season 2. But would the writers and producers ever go so far as to kill off Nicholas Brody? Well, Damian Lewis — the actor who portrays Brody — seems to think he’s already on borrowed time.
"I think simply for creative and artistic reasons, the writers want to kill me," Lewis tells Men’s Journal in an exclusive interview. "The more compromised storytelling is to keep him alive and to keep him bubbling along somehow.”
Yeah, we just heard all you Carrie / Brody shippers shriek — and we’re right there with you — but it does make sense. After all, we are talking about a show that has no qualms about blowing up the CIA and killing two-thirds of its agents. With someone whose entire life situation is as volatile as Brody’s (on the run from the U.S. government but probably not super welcome back in Syria either), we should all be wondering how he’s made it this far.
In fact, Brody’s sitch is so precarious that Damian admits he gets weekly updates during filming to let him know whether Brody’s gonna survive the next episode. As for how he feels about the lack of job security, he’s pretty Brody-like in his response —i.e., totally impossible to read. “I’ll just see what happens.”
