With nary a Sarah Palin costume in sight, Tina Fey’s September 28 hosting gig helped Saturday Night Live achieve its best premiere ratings in three years, reports The Wrap.
The Season 39 starter drew 6.5 million viewers, a 10 percent increase since last year’s premiere. The episode also earned a 2.4 rating/10 share in the advertising-important 18 to 49 demographic; that’s a 9 percent increase since 2012.
Funny enough, the last time SNL had a premiere this big, another alum was in the driver’s seat: Tina’s Golden Globes Awards co-host bud, Amy Poehler. Let’s start a petition for them to host SNL together.
Currently, SNL as a whole is undergoing a major overhaul — or “a rebuilding year,” as Tina put it during her monologue. The six new cast members proved they came to play during the opening, with Tina playing the role of seasoned SNL alum to their young, fresh, gold short-shorts wearing talent.
Also a likely aid to the ratings jump: featured musical talent Arcade Fire and surprise guest Aaron Paul, whose own hit show had a record-breaking evening the very next night. To think Tina told us there were no Breaking Bad stars slated to appear and we still tuned in!
