This season’s cast of the long-running reality show The Real World won’t exactly be seven strangers picked to live in a house.
To shake things up for the show’s 29th season, producers have added a major plot twist for the first time in the show’s history.
This season, the seven young and beautiful cast members will move into a decked-out San Francisco home, just as in any other year. One month into the three-month shoot, however, some unexpected guests will arrive: each cast members ex.
The ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends of the housemates move in for the duration of the shoot, a twist that will surely lead to more drama than ever before.
Even the show itself will get a name change, as it will be called Real World: Ex-Plosion.
“When we cast people we usually always try to cast single people,” show creator Jonathan Murray toldEntertainment Weekly back in November. “And they’d say they were single during the casting process. Then the moment they arrived at the house suddenly their ex was back in their life. I don’t know if it’s a safety blanket or that we’re never really done with our exes. When you talk about the age of our cast, their ex is often their first love — they play a huge role in their life.”
When casting for Season 29, Jonathan said the producers specifically sought out singles who had an interesting relationship with their ex.
“Four weeks into the show, after some [housemates] started to develop new relationships, the exes come in — thus, Ex-Plosion,” Jonathan said. “Then it got really complicated and really interesting. I’m still shocked we were able to pull it off.”
